How Dutch net salary is calculated in 2026
Dutch employees pay income tax and national insurance contributions together as loonheffing, withheld by the employer. For 2026 there are three Box 1 brackets for people below state-pension age, and two tax credits (heffingskortingen) reduce the amount due. Unlike most countries, employees pay no separate unemployment or disability premiums and no health-insurance levy on their payslip: those are employer costs (plus the private basic health insurance premium you pay yourself, around €150–160 a month in 2026).

Box 1 brackets 2026 (below AOW age)
| Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to €38,883 | 35.75% (8.10% tax + 27.65% national insurance) |
| €38,883 – €78,426 | 37.56% |
| Over €78,426 | 49.50% |
Tax credits 2026
The general tax credit (algemene heffingskorting) is €3,115 up to €29,736 of income, then shrinks by 6.398% of the income above that and reaches zero at €78,426. The labour tax credit (arbeidskorting) rises with income to a maximum of €5,685 at €45,592, then falls by 6.51% of the excess and disappears at €132,920. Both are deducted from the bracket tax; they cannot make the tax negative.

Holiday allowance, minimum wage and the 30% ruling
The statutory holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) is 8% of gross pay, usually paid in May; job offers quote the monthly salary without it, so the calculator multiplies by 12 × 1.08 by default. The minimum wage for workers aged 21 and over is €14.71 per hour from 1 January 2026 and €14.99 from 1 July 2026 (about €2,294 a month on a 36-hour week in January). Qualifying expats with the 30% ruling receive 30% of their salary tax-free in 2026 (salary norm €48,013, or €36,497 under 30 with a master's degree); from 2027 the percentage drops to 27% for newer rulings.
Not included: pension contributions (often 4–8% of salary above a franchise), company car, commuting allowance, partner income, deductions for mortgage interest, and the different rates for people at or above state-pension age. Payroll tables round credits down to whole euros, so annual totals may differ by a euro or two.

Frequently asked questions
What is the net salary on €4,000 gross per month in the Netherlands?
With the 8% holiday allowance that is €51,840 a year; after 2026 tax and credits the net is about €40,050 a year, roughly €3,338 a month on average.
What are the Dutch income tax rates in 2026?
35.75% up to €38,883, 37.56% up to €78,426 and 49.5% above, for people below state-pension age.
Is health insurance deducted from my salary?
No. The income-related health contribution is paid by the employer. You pay your own basic insurance premium (about €150–160 a month) directly to the insurer.
Does the calculator include holiday allowance?
Yes. Dutch contracts quote monthly gross without the 8% vakantiegeld, so the default adds it; choose another option if your figure already includes it.
How does the 30% ruling work in 2026?
30% of the salary is paid tax-free (salary capped at €262,000), so tax is calculated on 70%. The minimum taxable salary is €48,013, or €36,497 for under-30s with a master's degree.
What is the minimum wage in 2026?
€14.71 per hour for workers aged 21+ from 1 January 2026, rising to €14.99 from 1 July 2026.
