UK statutory holiday entitlement
Almost all workers in the UK are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave a year. For someone working five days a week that is 28 days, which can include bank holidays. The entitlement is capped at 28 days, so working six or seven days a week does not increase it. Part-time workers get the same 5.6 weeks pro rata: three days a week gives 16.8 days, rounded up to 17.
| Days worked per week | Statutory leave (days) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 28 |
| 4 | 22.4 (22.5) |
| 3 | 16.8 (17) |
| 2.5 | 14 |
| 2 | 11.2 (11.5) |
| 1 | 5.6 (6) |
Starters, leavers and part-year workers
If you start or leave part-way through the leave year, your entitlement is built up pro rata. Someone entitled to 28 days who works six months gets 14 days. Employers should round up to the nearest half day.
Irregular hours and zero-hours contracts
Workers without set hours accrue holiday at 12.07% of hours worked. A person who works 1,000 hours in the year earns about 120.7 hours of leave. Accrual applies to each pay period, so rolled-up holiday pay is generally not allowed except as the law permits.
This is a guide to statutory leave; your contract can give more. See GOV.UK for the official rules. For take-home pay see the UK take-home pay calculator.
