Canadian sales tax rates by province
Sales tax in Canada is a mix of the federal GST (5%) and provincial taxes. Five provinces combine them into a single HST (harmonized sales tax), while British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec charge a separate provincial tax on top of GST, and Alberta and the territories charge GST only.
| Province or territory | Tax | Combined rate |
|---|---|---|
| Alberta | 5% GST | 5% |
| British Columbia | 5% GST + 7% PST | 12% |
| Manitoba | 5% GST + 7% RST | 12% |
| New Brunswick | 15% HST | 15% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 15% HST | 15% |
| Northwest Territories | 5% GST | 5% |
| Nova Scotia | 14% HST | 14% |
| Nunavut | 5% GST | 5% |
| Ontario | 13% HST | 13% |
| Prince Edward Island | 15% HST | 15% |
| Quebec | 5% GST + 9.975% QST | 14.975% |
| Saskatchewan | 5% GST + 6% PST | 11% |
| Yukon | 5% GST | 5% |
How to calculate sales tax
To add tax, multiply the price by the combined rate and add it: $100 in Ontario is $100 × 1.13 = $113. To remove tax from a total, divide by 1 plus the rate: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100. Do not subtract 13% from $113, because that gives $98.31, since the tax was calculated on the pre-tax price, not on the total.
Things worth knowing
- Quebec charges QST on the price before GST, so the two taxes do not compound; the combined rate is 14.975%.
- Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% in 2025.
- Zero-rated and exempt items such as basic groceries and most prescription drugs carry no GST/HST, and some provinces exempt items like children’s clothing from PST. This calculator applies the full rate to the amount you enter.
- Businesses that are GST/HST registrants can usually claim input tax credits for the tax they pay on business purchases.
Tax rates can change with provincial budgets; check the Canada Revenue Agency or your province for the current rate before filing or invoicing. This calculator is an estimate for everyday use.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate HST in Ontario?
Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.13 to get the HST, or by 1.13 to get the total. A $250 purchase has $32.50 in HST and costs $282.50.
How do I take HST out of a total?
Divide the total by 1.13 in Ontario (or by 1 plus the rate in your province). $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax.
What is the difference between GST, PST and HST?
GST is the 5% federal tax. PST is a provincial tax charged on top of GST in some provinces. HST combines GST and the provincial tax into one rate in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces.
Which provinces have no provincial sales tax?
Alberta, and the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, which charge only the 5% GST.
What is the sales tax in Quebec?
5% GST plus 9.975% QST, for a combined 14.975%. QST is calculated on the pre-tax price, so the two taxes are not compounded.
Are groceries taxed in Canada?
Basic groceries are zero-rated, so there is no GST/HST on them. Prepared foods, snacks and restaurant meals are generally taxable.
