Frequently asked questions
How is net salary calculated from gross in Germany?
Income tax, the solidarity surcharge (where it applies) and the employee share of pension, unemployment, health and long-term care insurance are deducted from gross pay. The calculator uses the 2026 values.
Which case does the calculator cover?
Employees in tax class I with no children and no church tax, in statutory health insurance with an average additional contribution of 2.9% (employee share 1.45%) and long-term care insurance with the childless surcharge.
What are the 2026 contribution ceilings?
EUR 8,450 per month for pension and unemployment insurance, and EUR 5,812.50 per month for health and long-term care insurance. Contributions do not rise above those amounts.
Is the solidarity surcharge included?
Yes. It only applies at higher incomes because the exemption limit is EUR 20,350 of annual income tax. Above it, it phases in up to 5.5% of income tax.
How accurate is the result?
The income tax was spot-checked against the German Federal Ministry of Finance’s official wage-tax calculator. Your payslip may differ because of tax class, children, church tax or your health fund’s own surcharge.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Your inputs are not stored.
