How to calculate GST in Australia

Goods and services tax (GST) in Australia is 10%. To add GST to a price, multiply by 1.1: $100 plus GST is $110. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price, divide by 1.1, which means the GST is one eleventh of the total: $110 includes $10 of GST and a price of $100 before GST. This calculator does both and shows the GST amount.

Some items are GST-free, such as many basic foods and some health and education services; those have no GST to add or remove.

How do I remove GST from a price?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.1, or divide by 11 to get the GST amount. $220 including GST is $200 before GST, with $20 of GST.

What is the GST rate in Australia?

10% on most goods and services.

Why divide by 11 and not take 10%?

Because the GST-inclusive price already contains the GST. Ten percent of the total would overstate it; one eleventh gives the exact GST.

Is everything subject to GST?

No. Some supplies are GST-free or input-taxed, such as certain basic foods and health or education services.
